British Orangutan commercial not cleared

A recent commercial in the U.K. wasn’t cleared to air on British TV because it was deemed to violate laws against political advertising. The British food retailing company, Iceland, made the commercial to campaign against the destruction of the rainforest as a result of production of palm oil.
In the commercial a girl finds an orangutan in her bedroom playing with her toys, destroying her plants, and screeching at a palm oil product. When the orangutan leaves, the girl asks why she (the orangutan) was at her house. The commercial then zooms into the orangutan’s eye and shows machines chopping down the forest and the orangutans mother dying as an effect to deforestation. It zooms out back to the girl and she says that she’ll help save her home by sharing her story.
Clearcast, a nongovernmental body that approves commercials, decided that the ad violated British laws against political advertising in the U.K. (Click here to learn more about Clearcasts decision to not let the ad air on British TV). As a result of Clearcast not clearing the ad, roughly 900,000 people signed an online petition to let the ad be aired.

Do you think the ad should be cleared? Do you think it was reasonable that Clearcast didn't air the ad?

Comments

  1. I believe that the commercial should be aired so that more people can be aware of the issue with deforestation. I feel like people know that it’s going on, but they don’t understand the affect it has on the wildlife that inhabits that area. I believe that rather than political, this commercial is just informational and the company is looking too much into it.

  2. Great example, Luke, but try to find an example that's applicable to things happening in the U.S.A.
