British Orangutan commercial not cleared

      A recent commercial in the U.K. wasn’t cleared to air on British TV because it was deemed to violate laws against political advertising. The British food retailing company, Iceland, made the commercial to campaign against the destruction of the rainforest as a result of production of palm oil.       In the commercial a girl finds an orangutan in her bedroom playing with her toys, destroying her plants, and screeching at a palm oil product. When the orangutan leaves, the girl asks why she (the orangutan) was at her house. The commercial then zooms into the orangutan’s eye and shows machines chopping down the forest and the orangutans mother dying as an effect to deforestation. It zooms out back to the girl and she says that she’ll help save her home by sharing her story.       Clearcast, a nongovernmental body that approves commercials, decided that the ad violated British laws against political advertising in the U.K. ( Click here to ...
