Luke's junior year blog

I think the most challenging part of this reading is the choice of words the author uses or how there are foreshadows thrown in at random times. The vocab makes the reading harder because if I don’t know what a word mean it can throw off an entire sentence and I might misunderstand it. I also find the foreshadowing difficult, because when there are foreshadows it throws the reading off and it confuses me because I have to think back to see if it’s actually connected. I go about the vocab problem by looking up a word that I don’t know. I don’t look up every word I dont know though. I try to look up one in every five words that I don’t know. I go about the foreshadow problem by re reading the passage and if it’s something I haven’t read I’ll know it’s a foreshadow.

       My full name is Luke Mark Weilandt. I am named after saint Luke and my middle name, Mark, is my dads first name. My last name, Weilandt, is a German last name. My dads parents moved to Illinois from Germany in 1957. They came to America for a better life because Germany was a war torn country and there wasn’t much hope living in Germany at the time. They knew if they stayed in Germany they would continue working low end jobs. When my grandparents came to America they took a small plane that stopped in Iceland aswell as Canada, finally arriving in Chicago. They decided to move to the Chicagoland area because they both had relatives living there and would stay with them until they could support themselves. My grandparents worked very hard when they first moved to the US. My grandpa worked as a plumber and saved up all his money so that he could buy a building. He continued to save his money and work hard and got a few more buildings.        ...

      A recent commercial in the U.K. wasn’t cleared to air on British TV because it was deemed to violate laws against political advertising. The British food retailing company, Iceland, made the commercial to campaign against the destruction of the rainforest as a result of production of palm oil.       In the commercial a girl finds an orangutan in her bedroom playing with her toys, destroying her plants, and screeching at a palm oil product. When the orangutan leaves, the girl asks why she (the orangutan) was at her house. The commercial then zooms into the orangutan’s eye and shows machines chopping down the forest and the orangutans mother dying as an effect to deforestation. On October 2, Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist who wrote monthly columns in the Washington Post criticizing the policies of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, vanished at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. After his strange disappearance, Saudi officials claimed that he left the consulate alive and well. They also stated that he was a target of a rogue operation, conducted by Saudi intelligent services. On October 20, 18 days after Khashoggi vanished, it was announced that Khashoggi was strangled in a fight that broke out on October 2 when Saudi agents attempted to convince him to return to the kingdom and sadly died. It wasn’t until Thursday that a new account was published by a Saudi-owned media, which included evidence of a planned assassination. The director of the CIA has been expected to receive an audio recording of the killing as well as evidence that Turkey have said point to orders from the upper levels of the Saudi Royal family to kill Khashoggi. Many hockey players and fans know the dangers of playing hockey. It was reported that during a 7 year span in the NHL there were 559 concussions reported by team physicians. There are around 23 players on an NHL roster and there are 31 teams in the NHL. There are about 713 players on NHL rosters each year. Approximately 11% of the total number of players in the NHL get concussed a year. According to ex NHL players, Dan Carcillo and Nick Boynton, the NHL allowed and encouraged them to continue playing after receiving concussions.
